The Quake Engine is a piece of Legendary (5-Star) Gear, evolved from the Epic (4-Star) gear, Time Capsule. The unevolved version can be obtained by ranking in the top 5% of certain Online Battle seasons, or as a possible reward in the Worst Heroes Ever Bundle, The Dawn of Justice Triple Pack, Nth Metal Pro Packs, or Nth Metal Ultimate Packs.

It was introduced in Patch 2.21.

Effects[]

  • 20% - 40% chance to POWER STEAL up to 100% of a Special 2's cost
  • Specials and DOTs do +25% - +50% DAMAGE against an enemy with less than 1 POWER bar
  • [The Joker] Increases enemy Tag cooldown by 3 - 8 seconds
  • [EVOLVED] After an applied DOT finishes, 50% - 100% chance to retrigger the DOT on active enemy

Mechanics[]

Power Steal[]

Quake Engine power steal

Power steal on Lord Joker's SP2

It may trigger on your SP2 and steal power up to 2 bars of power (depending on how much power the opponent has) and give it to you. Testing indicates that it can only trigger on the first hit that is not blocked (block breaker works too). In any case, it can only power steal once per special attack, regardless of number of hits. If the special attack is initially blocked, it may trigger on the first hit after the opponent stops blocking. This also applies to partially unblockable special attacks (e.g. Superman/Godfall's Frozen Delivery). If the first hit is a KO blow, that hit won't trigger - but it would similarly retain the chance to trigger on the next unblocked hit on the next opponent.

The "first hit" can count other effects that take place during the special attack, even if they are not the special itself. The Master's Death Cart's tag in damage will count as the "first hit" and may apply the power steal. This is significant as this power steal can allow Quake Engine's damage boost against enemies with less than 1 bar of power to activate, especially noticeable for 1 hit SP2s (e.g. Ares/Prime). Even Raven/Prime's passive, if triggered right as her SP2 begins, can trigger the power steal before the special attack's hits.

The LexCorp Set's 2-piece effect will instead gain power when hit by this effect. However, the Quake Engine's user can still gain power.

Increased enemy Tag cooldown[]

This only applies when the Quake Engine is equipped on any Joker character. It is in a way the reverse of Hawkgirl/Prime's passive - she reduces her teammates' Tag cooldown by 4 seconds, the Quake Engine increases the enemies' Tag cooldown for up to 8 seconds. It is constantly active as long as Joker is equipped with it on the team, even if he is not tagged in. The effect is nullified if Joker is KO'd.

Quake Engine Bonus Damage

Joker gains bonus damage from the Quake Engine when opponent has less than a bar of power.

Damage increase against enemy with less than 1 bar of power[]

When the opponent has less than one bar of power, its user will be covered by electricity visually.

For power draining special attacks, a hit that deals power drain consider the power level before the power drain is applied for the purpose of Quake Engine's damage boost.

Gear DOTs (e.g. The Ibistick) and bleed on combo ender of Darkseid/Apokolips do NOT gain this damage boost. Other DOT do, and whether the damage is increased is calculated when the DOT is applied, and does not update during its course if the power amount changes; it does update if it is re-triggered (see below). Only the user's DOT can receive the damage boost, existing DOT from his/her teammates will not be boosted.

The Batman Who Laughs Metal and Batman/Gaslight have DOTs that could be applied on teammate tag in. This is considered their own DOT, and they must have the Quake Engine to apply the damage increase, not their teammates.

Although The Joker/Prime and The Joker/Insurgency's passives are considered DOT by The Flash/Blackest Night's passive, Quake Engine's damage boost (or retrigger) does not apply on those passives.

DOT Re-trigger[]

Core to the Quake Engine's strength. This can only happen once per DOT, and only the user's DOT can be re-triggered.

The Quake Engine's user does not need to be tagged in for their DOTs to re-trigger. If the target tags out, it can re-trigger onto the next opponent as long as it hasn't been re-triggered yet. Invulnerability will prevent the re-trigger, but Reverse Flash rinsing DOT will not prevent it.

Gear DOT that deals damage according to the target's maximum health, even when re-triggered onto a different opponent, will still do damage based on the original target's max health.

If a blow that would normally apply DOT turns out to be a KO blow, the Quake Engine will not trigger the DOT onto the next opponent. If the target is an enemy Aquaman/Injustice 2 who has reversed the original DOT, the Quake Engine can still re-trigger it onto Aquaman or his team. If the Quake Engine user is KO'ed, existing DOTs cannot retrigger.

Even if Sinestro/Antimatter is equipped with DOT gear and forces his enemy to tag out using his SP1, DOT will NOT be re-triggered, despite the DOT animation before they tag out.

The Batman Who Laughs Metal and Batman/Gaslight have DOTs that could be applied on teammate tag in. This is considered their own DOT, and they must have the Quake Engine to re-trigger their bleed and bat swarm, not their teammates.

The Flash/Blackest Night and his Blackest Night teammates gain health and power instead of taking damage from DOTs; Quake Engine will still retrigger.

Retriggered DOT will carry over additional effects (see here for a full list of DOT sources):

Strategy[]

The Quake Engine is a powerful gear that can turn the tides in a match especially when used correctly on the right characters.

This gear is best used on its signature characters, namely Lord Joker/Batman Ninja and The Joker/Arkham Origins for they can take advantage of the tag cooldown effect made for them. Arkham Origins Joker can make great use of its DOT effects, while Lord Joker can take advantage of the power steal to increase his SP2's damage or enchant his poison on SP1. The tag cooldown effect is still active even if The Joker is knocked out, making it a great gear for "kamikaze" Jokers such as The Joker/The Killing Joke and The Joker/Insurgency.

Killer Frost/Prime can also greatly benefit with this gear. Equipped with the Quake Engine, The Ibistick and Ra’s al Ghul’s Scimitar, she can immediately activate her SP1 to cut down the opponent’s power generation to potentially 0% and also keep the opponent from gaining a single bar of power by constantly power draining through her combo-ender. Characters with Power Drain on their SP1 (Nightwing, Lex Luthor and Green Arrow) equipped with the Quake Engine and The Ibistick can also benefit particularly from the 2nd effect of the Quake Engine - unless the opponent is immune to Power Drain (Lobo/Prime, Static, Red Lantern Hal Jordan, and Batman/Arkham Knight with power drain immunity buff selected) or any character equipped with at least 2/3 of the LexCorp Set. On the other hand, the gear itself already has a power drain effect which synergizes well with this effect. In addition, Raven/Rebirth can tag-in, steal power from the opponent and fire off an SP2 with increased damage. Although Aquaman/Injustice 2 can be a threatening counter to DOT-dealing characters equipped with the Quake Engine, he also greatly benefits from this gear especially when he reverses and doubles the DOT effect on his hapless victim.

However, with the combo of the Quake Engine + The Ibistick, ALL CHARACTERS can deal 20% of the opponent’s maximum health per activation of Special thanks to the retrigger DOT effect - and in special cases, it’s even deadlier with characters that can apply The Ibistick’s Burn in a single Special attack more than once (e.g. SP1 of most versions of Batman, and SP1 of Batgirl/Cassandra Cain and Batgirl/Arkham Knight) - provided that the opponent doesn’t tag out, which can be really useful especially against opponents in Survivor Mode particularly in higher rounds, and also powerful Bosses like Batman/Arkham Origins in Area 7 and Superman/Blackest Night in Area 8.

The Quake Engine also has phenomenal synergy with the Heart of Darkness, as its power-draining DOT effect will double in length, allowing you to keep the opponent's power at a minimum. The Heart of Darkness also provides a 30% boost to power generation, so you can build up specials quickly and take advantage of the Quake Engine's special and DOT damage boost against the powerless opponent, and perpetuate this cycle.

Minus the intervention of Raven/Prime, Aquaman/Injustice 2, DOT-immune characters, Special attack and Gear-disabling characters and gears, and characters and gears with access to some form of Invulnerability and Resurrection, the Quake Engine can turn tides not only in a battle, but also the game’s current meta and contribute to its tremendous impact.

Trivia[]

  • The Quake Engine along with the Batman Ninja Helmet, and Brandished Ninjato are currently the only non-set legendary gears in the game to have 3 unequal values for the shard types.
  • This is the first Legendary gear to offer a character-specific effect to a character (The Joker) other than Batman (who already has the Militarized Batmobile and the Batman Ninja Helmet). In the Batman Ninja film it is based on, the Quake Engine actually belongs to Gorilla Grodd, who is not playable in the first Injustice game, although he is playable in the second.
