New 52 Superman is an offensive tank. Though he may not be able to shrug off special attacks like his Injustice 2 counterpart, Superman's threat level increases the longer he keeps fighting, as his passive boosts his basic attacks as long as Superman gains power and allows him to take less damage with every Justice League teammate.
Strategy
Basic attacks
Basic combo | Damage pattern (% of damage stat) | Total (including Combo Ender) |
---|---|---|
Light (Combo Ender) | 2% - 2% - 2% - (3%) | 9% |
Heavy | 4% - 4% - 4% | 12% |
Basic damage boost
New 52 Superman will gain a +100% basic attack damage buff for gaining power equivalent to every 2 bars (you do not have to reach a full bar to make it count, it will accumulate). Therefore, generating 6 bars of power in total (excess power counts toward his passive too) will allow him to deal 4 times as much damage on his basic attacks! This is not affected by power drain (e.g. If Superman is power drained to 0 power when he has reached one bar of power, generating another one bar of power will activate his damage boost regardless). Power wasted by going over maximum still counts (e.g. if he remained tagged out while he has max power, or if he tags in with Tantu Totem which would give him 1 bar, while he already has max power). Because of this, Wonder Woman/New 52 is arguably his best teammate, as wasted power due to the 3-bar cap still count toward his passive, helping him reach all 3 thresholds quickly, especially when she is equipped with Tantu Totem or other power generation gears.
It stacks with Nekron's Scythe and the Cloak of Destiny's damage boost on a stunned opponent; with those two pieces of gear, his basic attacks will do 8 times the normal damage on a stunned opponent. With the Overpowered 5-U-93-R, it becomes 17x on a crit. In theory with maxed crit augments, the Cloak, Scythe, and LexCorp Helmet V2, his basics can do 28x the damage:
( 1 ( base damage ) + 3 (passive) + 2 (Cloak) + 2 (Scythe) * (2.5 (max augmented crit modifier) + 0.5 (Cloak) + 0.5 (Helmet)) = 28
Max augmented and Elite X New 52 Superman theoretically has a damage stat of 88,451 and his heavy basic attacks would do 3538 damage without any modifiers, meaning that theoretically, he can do 99,064 damage in a single basic attack.
Defense
His "Justice League" is defined in the same ways as passives of New 52 Wonder Woman and Shazam/New 52 does.
Despite the passive description, it will count other Superman characters as part of his damage mitigation, but not himself. He will NOT start to take less damage unless there is at least one additional Justice League teammate beside him, similar to The Joker/Suicide Squad. Therefore, his damage reduction is capped at 30% and not 45% if there are two other Justice League teammates with him. It seems as though it is either bugged or the passive description is misleading as it only works with basic damage but not special damage or DOT.
Gear
It is highly recommended to give Superman power generation boosting gear. This will assist him in gaining his non-rinsable damage boosts. The Ibistick, Heart of Darkness, and League of Assassins Adept Knives are prime candidates as they both provide high rates of power generation as well additional abilities that Superman can use.
Tantu Totem not only gives him 1 bar of power on tags in, but refunds power used by a special if it KO'es or does no damage. This counts as gaining all that power again for his passive. For example, if Superman starts the match on the sidelines until he reaches 1 bar, he could tag in, immediately reach 2 bars, then use a special 2 that KO'es or deals no damage, and gain 2 bars back while his basic damage bonus is immediately set to +200%.
Giving Superman gear that boosts his basic attacks or gives critical chance to basic attacks will stack with his damage stacks, allowing him to do massive damage with his basic attacks.
Nekron's Scythe provides significant damage boost to the last hit of his SP2 due to Freeze, in addition to 1 Resurrect when Superman KO an enemy, which is most likely to happen as he is usually the main damage dealer of the team.
His signature Kryptonian Battle Suit may be a good choice as it will boost his already high health and gives him significant healing on his SP2. Additionally, giving Superman healing gear will add to his exceptional durability. The Fourth World Set and the LexCorp Set would both synergize well with Superman:
- The Fourth World Set's power generation boost, health boost, and health regeneration on SP1 can prolong the fight, allowing Superman a greater chance to achieve all three of his damage stacks.
- The LexCorp Set's power drain reverse effect, critical chance on basic attacks, and critical boost can allow Superman to punish his opponents early in the match. Furthermore, it also provides a strong source of healing on SP1.
Another setup would be to give him the Killer Croc Companion Card EVOLVED, Gingold Soda and Batman Ninja Helmet and pair him up with 2 Justice League characters.
- Superman/New 52: Gingold Soda, Killer Croc Companion Card EVOLVED, Batman Ninja Helmet
- Wonder Woman/New 52: The Ibistick/Heart of Darkness, Tantu Totem, The Master's Death Cart
- Aquaman/Injustice 2: Quake Engine, Claw of Horus, Astro-Harness
Such a setup with New 52 Superman would make him take very little damage from any attacks and generate lots of power in the process, making him a true god among them.
Interactions
Please note that battles are highly situational: this section only mentions cards that have mechanics that, for any reason, are particularly effective with/against, or particularly ineffective against Superman. Having a card that "counters" Superman does not mean it is always a good choice.
Good With
- Other Justice League characters as mentioned in his passive.:
- Wonder Woman/New 52: Aside from the damage mitigation Superman receives, her passive can help him gain his basic damage buff quicker.
- Green Lantern/Regime: While also activating his damage mitigation passive, Green Lantern’s passive accelerates Superman’s power generation, thus activating his passive quicker.
- Shazam/New 52: As mentioned in Strategy.
- Batgirl/Prime: She can offer him 1 bar of power at the beginning of the match. If Superman is also equipped with Ra's Al Ghul's Scimitar or tags in with Tantu Totem, he will start off with 1 stack of passive buff as he already has 2 bars of power gained at the start of the match.
- Tantu Totem and The Master's Death Cart: Both of these gears can give Superman one bar of power on every tag-in. Equipping them both on Superman will activate a damage buff on every tag-in. In the case of Tantu Totem, all power returns will contribute towards Superman's passive, including those from knocking out an opponent or dealing no damage with a special.
- The Joker/The Killing Joke: Upon knockout, The Joker will grant the whole team max power, giving Superman an immediate buff and a half. Technically, by combining a low-level Joker, Batgirl, Scimitar, and Totem, Superman can start off with 3 stacks of passive, but this is not recommended due to waste of power.
- Harley Quinn/Animated: She can help Superman increase his damage output as well as allowing him to gain his basic damage buff quicker.
Good Against
- The Flash/Reverse Flash, Batman/Dawn of Justice, The Flash/Wally West Rebirth, and Superman/Injustice 2: New 52 Superman is able to deal monumental basic damage, thus not activating their notorious passives. Additionally, other than Reverse Flash, their special-immunity becomes a drawback when New 52 Superman has Tantu Totem as stated above; New 52 Superman gains back all the power and that counts towards increasing his basic damage (Except against Reverse Flash since his passive doesn't let Tantu Totem refund power unless he gets knocked out).
- Green Lantern/Red Son, Zod/Man of Steel, and Black Adam/New 52: He can deal high amount of damage without using special attacks, bypassing their special damage reductions.
- Characters or gears that can drain power as Power Drain doesn't affect Superman's passive. Thus, he can deal a lot of damage without using specials.
- Hawkgirl/Regime: Disabling his specials doesn't prevent him from using his powerful basic attacks.
Countered By
- Solomon Grundy/Earth 2: His passive slows down his opponent’s power generation to half speed. Thus slowing down Superman’s passive activation. This also applies to Solomon Grundy’s Earth 2 teammates which makes the full Earth 2 team a threat to Superman.
- Killer Frost/Prime: Her passive dampens the opponent’s power generation by 50%, which puts Superman at a high disadvantage as his passive would activate at a much slower rate.
- The Flash/Blackest Night: Flash has a chance to evade basic attacks, leaving Superman open to counter attacks.
- Gingold Soda: All of its effects help to reduce damage from basic attacks, especially the chance to take no damage from basic attacks.
Abilities
Here are Superman's abilities.

His SP1 uses the 3-hit version like the newer Superman cards.
His SP2, Defender of Earth, consists of 3 hits and all of them can perform KO blow, allowing him to potentially KO up to 3 enemies with 1 use of his SP2. It has freeze on the second hit, allowing the last hit to receive damage boost from Nekron's Scythe. Superman can also easily chain his SP2 from heavy combo, making it one of the best special attack in the game.
