Earth 2 Solomon Grundy is a character that was introduced in the 2.9 update, yet his challenge did not air during the short amount of time the update was current (due to the primacy of the 2.10 update and the Injustice 2 characters). However, up until his initial release near the end of the 2.11 update, he can be fought as an opponent in Superman/Injustice 2's and Aquaman/Injustice 2's challenges, and in certain matches in Survivor Mode as well! In 2.17, he was given a buff to his passive that allows him to dampen his current opponent's power generation, making him the undead behemoth of Earth 2.
Strategy[]
Basic Attacks[]
Basic combo | Damage pattern (% of damage stat) | Total (including Combo Ender) |
---|---|---|
Light (Combo Ender) | 2% - 2% - 2% - (3%) | 9% |
Heavy | 4% - 4% - 4% | 12% |
Passive[]
DOT[]
Solomon Grundy can be quite an effective tank when used correctly. His decently high Health can allow him to soak up a lot of Damage, and he can also deal a small amount of DOT damage back at his opponent while doing so. The DOT portion of his passive is somewhat negligible; it only deals approximately 1.5% of his damage stat (similar to the LexCorp Set), and as his damage stat is mediocre, this can make the DOT unimportant. Additionally, its damage is not increased when he is combined with the full LexCorp Set; rather, it appears as if the Set's DOT does not activate at all when both he and the set are paired together, thus it is not recommended to equip him with it.
Its function with the Quake Engine is unique, as his DOT has unlimited duration, therefore, it cannot be re-triggered, even when Grundy tags out. The damage boost takes effect when Grundy tags in/start the fight and the first opponent he fights has less than 1 bar of power, even when that enemy gains more power, since Quake Engine boosts DOT damage until it runs out. Because of that, even when a new enemy with more than 1 bar tags in, the DOT damage boost is still applied.
Gear decay[]
However, his real value comes in his gear-decaying passive. This effect, while somewhat similar to Superman/Dawn of Justice's, actually has many different technical aspects. If Grundy decays a piece of gear, that person will lose all of that gear's effects for the entire match. This can be very effective against opponents such as Bane/Luchador. Invulnerability cannot prevent him applying gear decay. However, Grundy cannot choose which piece of gear he decays, so he may have to tag in multiple times to decay a particularly annoying or effective one. Grundy may tag-in as much as time allows, but he will only be able to decay gear 9 times at most (3 gear slots for 3 enemies).
Grundy's gear decaying is unable to affect 'start of match' effects, such as the starting bar of power from Ra's al Ghul's Scimitar or the power drain from the Mother Box. Grundy's decaying does affect Gear Set effects, like Superman.
Power generation dampening[]
His power dampening stacks additively with Killer Frost/Prime's passive. If teamed with her, absolutely zero power is generated fighting normally against him or another Earth 2 teammate (including The Master's Death Cart's tag in damage). However, sources providing fixed amount of power (like Tantu Totem, Harley Quinn/Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman/New 52, Static/Prime, etc.) are unaffected. This combination reduces power generation by 100%, but if the opponent has power generation bonuses (e.g. passives like Cyborg/Regime, gear like The Ibistick), they can still generate some power. Power dampening from Solomon Grundy and his Earth 2 teammates can only affect the current opponent fighting them.
Gear[]
When gearing him, his health and durability should be kept in mind. As such, combining him with healing/blocking/health-boosting gears is recommended. To this end, the Fourth World Set is optimal, as it grants a large health boost, blocking boost, Resurrection, and regeneration (as well as a tag-in Stun to complement Grundy's passive). The League of Assassins Set can also be effective, as it capitalizes on his tag-based passive and DOT. As mentioned earlier, however, it is not advised to pair the full LexCorp Set with him. His signature Knife Collection is a very good fit on him as well, as it allows him to heal on his often-used SP1.
Interactions[]
Please note that battles are highly situational: this section only mentions cards that have mechanics that, for any reason, are particularly effective with/against, or particularly ineffective against Solomon Grundy. Having a card that "counters" Solomon Grundy does not mean it is always a good choice.
Good With[]
- Any Earth 2 characters.
- Hawkgirl/Prime: As mentioned above, she can be very useful with Grundy to tag him in more often.
- Killer Frost/Prime: Any active opponent fighting Grundy or his Earth 2 teammate with Killer Frost on his team would generate absolutely no power whether they hit or are being hit. The tagged out opponents will still generate power at 50% the normal rate.
- Green Lantern/Regime: While Grundy is tagged in, combined with Green Lantern's fast power generation, he can use his specials multiple times before the enemy can.
- Nightwing/Batman Ninja: Grundy's continuous need to tag coupled with Nightwing can severely punish characters to the point of never allowing them a single bar of power. A team of Grundy, Nightwing and Killer Frost can be a nightmare for all teams which rely heavily on Special Attacks by not allowing them to generate a single bar of Power.
- Superman/Dawn of Justice, and Catwoman/Batman Ninja: All three of them can create an annoying team of decaying opponents' gears.
Good Against[]
- Any opponents who are typically geared more heavily than others and become much more effective with gearing, such as (though obviously not limited to) Killer Frost (both versions), Batgirl, Bane/Luchador, Deathstroke/Arkham Origins, and The Flash/Metahuman. Do note that the chance is low for him to destroy gear, so he may need protection.
- Sinestro/Antimatter: Sinestro's constant force-tagging will result in Grundy decaying more gears, thus it can limit his potential with the League of Assassins Set equipped.
- Hawkgirl/Prime: Snaring Grundy will be more risky as she or her teammate will suffer from his continuous DOT and power dampening for longer.
Countered By[]
- Batman/Arkham Knight: He can choose to be immune to Grundy's DOT, effectively rendering half of his passive useless. Batman also does not require as many gears to be effective (due to his various passive buffs) and therefore is not as affected by Grundy's gear-decaying either. Lastly, he can give himself 2 bars of power once, getting an early start and possibly avoiding an extended match with his power dampener.
- Batman/Arkham Origins: Similar to above, he starts with 2 bars of power unaffected.
- Static/Prime: He gains significant power by blocking specials, and therefore is not affected much by Solomon Grundy's power reduction.
- Sinestro/Antimatter: Sinestro can also force Grundy to tag out, getting rid of his continuous DOT and the power dampening, although the power dampening will still stay if another Earth 2 teammate tags in instead.
- The Joker/The Killing Joke: Upon getting KOed, Joker gives his team an instant full power, unaffected by Grundy's power dampening. Grundy's DOT can also bring Joker close to KO.
- Sinestro/Green Lantern, Sinestro/Prime, Sinestro/Regime, Hal Jordan/Yellow Lantern, and Batman/Gaslight: They benefit from the opponent constantly tagging in and out.
- Harley Quinn/Arkham Knight: Same as above, although possibly more punishing.
- Hawkgirl/Prime: She has the ability to snare, preventing Grundy from tagging in or out.
- The Flash/Blackest Night: Grundy's DOT will continuously heal Blackest Night teammates. Although it still dampens power, the DOT of his passive backfires.
- Quake Engine: Given to a Joker character, it increases tag time and limits Grundy's passive.

Trivia[]
- His artifacts are Wrist Bands, Boots, Arm Bandages, Belt, and Harness.
- You'll receive a free copy of a Silver character upon completing Match 10 of Battle 4 in Standard difficulty.
- He's the first mobile card to be based on a console skin since Hawkgirl/Regime.
- Both him and Superman/Dawn of Justice have very similar passives, as both have the abilitiy to "disable" opponent's gear(s).
- Instead of releasing his challenge in the 2.9 update, NetherRealm decided to release the 2.10 update but his challenge finally aired near the end of the 2.11 update.
- It was possible to receive his SP2's Upgrades in random booster packs before he was released.
- This version of Grundy does not have any cleavers or knives lodged in his back but during his Super Move and SP1, he would still use a cleaver from his back.
- He's the only version of Solomon Grundy to not have a passive directly correlated to his health, though his DOT does affect the opponent's health.
- Previously before the 2.17 update, his passive was "Death and Decay: On Tag In, Solomon Grundy's Aura does a DAMAGE OVER TIME to the enemy. CHANCE to decay a piece of gear for the whole match on Tag In.
- Additionally, before 2.19, his passive was named "Death Aura" before it was changed back to the old name but with the '&' instead of 'and'. When he tags in, the text that pops up combines both and reads "Death Aura and Decay".
