Passives are abilities that are always present to aid the characters, without needing to be unlocked. Passives have a myriad of effects, like increasing all damage dealt by the team, triggering a bonus effect upon falling below a certain amount of health, modifying a special attack or super move, immunity to certain status effects, gaining special effects when teamed with certain other characters, as well as many else or a combination thereof.
Their great variety causes them to often be the biggest factor that decides the identity of a character, even more so than their stats.
Bronze, Silver and Gold characters cannot have their passives upgraded. However, the new tier Nth Metal can upgrade their passives when evolved, greatly empowering their strength in battle.
Passives are disabled in Dead Zone, a battle modifier that used to appear in Area 7.

- Some characters' passives have incorrect description, such as Raven/Prime whose passive can work on bosses despite her passive's description, albeit with different mechanic, or Catwoman/Batman Ninja whose passive is glitched and can a lot more power than what stated in per passive.
- Raven/Prime also has her passive work differently against bosses and mini-bosses.
- The Flash/Regime and The JokerUnhinged/Suicide Squad have (part of) their passives nullified by bosses or mini-bosses.
- Superman/Dawn of Justice's passive is totally useless in all modes other than Online Battle and Survivor Mode as AI enemies can't equip gear in all modes other than those 2.
- Darkseid/Prime is the only character whose passive affects the match finding of Online Battle, limiting his use in this mode.
