Damage reduction is a mechanic that reduces the damage taken from attacks. Damage reduction can be categorised into four forms: basic, special, DOT, and universal.
Damage reduction stacks additively with itself. It is possible to stack 100% damage reduction against basic attacks or specials; however, this is distinct from Invulnerability, as 100% damage reduction does not prevent flinching, or applying Status Effect.
It reduces the final damage received, after taking all sources of damage boost (and mini-game performance too if it's special attack) into calculation. Therefore, if damage reduction to a type of attack is stacked to 100%, character will not receive any damage from that type of attack, even if that attack receives more than 100% damage boost, with damage boost from bleed as the sole exception.
Basic attack reduction[]
Reduces damage from Basic attacks.
Special reduction[]
Reduces damage from Special Attacks.
This should not be confused with abilities to evade specials via Blink, or Superman/Injustice 2's special immunity.
Damage-Over-Time reduction[]
Reduces damage from Damage-Over-Time.
Immunity[]
- Batman/Arkham Knight - his passive allows him to choose to be immune to all DOT.
- Scorpion/Klassic - his passive grants immune to all fire DOT.
- The Flash/Blackest Night - his passive causes DOT to not deal damage but instead heal and grant power to him and Blackest Night teammates. This is distinct from immunity, as immunity prevents the DOT from being applied at all and also prevents secondary effects, which Flash's passive does not.
Area effect damage reduction[]
Reduce Area Effect damage.
Passive-based Area Effect ignores all other forms of damage reduction, including universal damage reduction. If the main target has damage reduction, they will take reduced damage but their teammates take regular damage as if it was not reduced. If a tagged-out character has damage reduction, no effect at all will take place. However, gear-based Area Effect will reduce damage taken for the whole team in the former scenario.
Universal damage reduction[]
Reduces damage from almost any sort of damage (with Raven/Prime's health swap being the only known effect unaffected). Power Drain is also reduced proportionately. Shazam/Prime's passive (which, among other effects, temporarily gives him 2 power bars that cannot be drained and 50% universal damage reduction) seems to have a unique interaction with Raven/Rebirth's passive (steal all enemy power if more than hers), by reducing the power stolen. Other forms of universal damage reduction does not seem to reduce her power stolen.
- Batman/Batman Ninja
- Green Lantern/Prime
- Martian Manhunter/Blackest Night
- Shazam/Prime
- Shazam/New 52
- Superman/New 52 (seems to work on Basic attack only)
- The Joker/Suicide Squad
- Batman Ninja Helmet
Unaffected[]
Some sources of damage are unaffected by damage reduction:
Interactions[]
There are several other effects that reduce damage, but is distinct from damage reduction.
Damage reduction additively with Reflect, but multiplicatively with Block.
Reduce enemy damage effects make an enemy deal less damage. This is applied on the enemy, which means ALL characters will receive less damage from the target until the effect wears out. They stack multiplicatively with damage reduction, and include:
For example, 1 stack of poison on the enemy causes them to deal 20% less damage. Batman/Batman Ninja has 50% damage reduction when outnumbered. With both, he takes 60% less damage.
